For over 20 years, I've been active in the MEP side of the built environment, and enjoy experience in all facets of the business having worked for and with engineering firms, contractors and manufacturers. After relocating to Northern Virginia in 2008, my practice became heavily focused on the data centre market and the mechanical systems therein became my full time job and passion. From retrofit and refresh cycles through massive greenfield construction projects, the swift and energy efficient deployment of mission critical systems has been my main focus since.
From 2008 on, my team and I had to become pioneers in large scale manager/lineup strategies in the monitoring and control of mission critical HVAC on both air (CRAH/CRAC and DOAS/RTU) and water (chilled, condenser and evaporative plants) central and terminal systems with goal of having "tight control from chip to chiller". From the first 41.6 MW colocation construction in the US through 60 MW high performance compute facilities for USG intelligence community to the truly hyperscale facilities we work on today, I've had the distinct pleasure of being in the proverbial game.
I was an early adopter and advocate of integrating traditional BAS/BMS (HVAC) with EPMS (electrical) and server telemetry (DCIM and legacy machine protocols) to "let the little fans run the big fans". I was fortunate enough to literally co-write the book on DCIM/OT integration with colleagues from ASHRAE TC9.9, and while serving as the elected President of the Automated Logic Corporation Distribution Council, I coaxed their team to develop an award winning software integration tool, the Optiflex Virtual Integrator (OFVI), for use in this endeavour in lieu of multiple large control panels full of Automated Logic's LAN Gateway Routers (LGRs). The OFVI went on to win the 2019 Innovation Award for Building Automation at the AHR Expo.
Since 2019, I've been disrupting the data centre Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) space by introducing ultrapure polymer fluid distribution systems designed to reduce structural demands while increasing mechanical performance, energy efficiency and reliability. With one patented product in the EU ready for launch, and hard work at play evangelising and standardizing the wild west of liquid cooling, I'm excited to put my Gigawatts of experience to use making the world a smarter, greener, and more connected place.
